Schuco ASE 60 Sliding Door Review

In 2018, the new Schuco ASE 60 sliding door was introduced by Schuco.  That same year this door won the Red Dot Design Award 2018 under the Interior Design Elements category.  The Schüco FWS 35 PD.HI used with the sliding patio door ASS 77 PD.HI also won awards in this category, as did the Schuco FireStop system, an internal slimline door with a fire rating.   A latest generation sliding door, with impressive aesthetics and clever design features. We review the latest Schuco ASE 60 sliding door and tell you everything you need to know.  Also mentioned is its other variant the Schuco ASE 80.HI model.

Schuco ASE 60 Sliding Door

What is the Schuco ASE 60 Sliding Door?

Schuco is already internationally renowned as a leading aluminium systems company.  In the UK, their bifolding and sliding doors are especially popular, not only as top-of-the-line doors but for brand kudos, engineering and design.  While there are similar-looking doors to Schuco, you only need to slide or fold a Schuco door to see the real quality behind the product. The Schuco ASS70 FD bifolding door is slim, highly engineered and one of the best bifolds on the market. There is also the ASS70 sliding door is also widely used in the UK available as an inline or lift and slide door for the home.

With the ASE 60, Schuco has set out to enhance an improve a winning concept. However, the trend for thinner sliding doors continues and especially at the door mullion, also known as the interlock. So not only has the company created a better, thinner and more attractive door, but they have also made it easier to make for the fabricators and better to fit for the installer. The ASE stands for Aluminium Sliding Element and the number denotes the frame thickness.

As well as this, this new door provides enhanced thermal insulation up to passive house standards when chosen as an 80mm deep system. As with any modern sliding door, you also get a choice of tracks meaning multiple leaves slide to the left or to the right. For fabricators especially, Schuco makes life easy thanks to multi-functional profiles.  The logic behind this is to streamline the stockholding and number of components fabricators hold. So whether you choose the ASE60 or the ASE80 model, most use the same parts whether you choose an inline or a lift and slide version.

Finally, this new door comes with the same broad range of sizes the company is well known for as well as continuing the brand reputation of architectural design freedom. This makes Schuco ideal for architectural glazing and more ambitious design projects.

Comparing Schuco ASE 80.HI and ASE60 sliding doors.

So what is the difference between these two models? It mainly comes down to U-Values,  frame depth and how thick you want the glass to be.  Most people will opt for the ASE60 for new build applications, but we see situations where the Schuco ASE 80.HI will suit replacement applications for the deeper frame depth.

Schuco ASE 60 vs ASE 80

For clarity on the maximum sizes, both the ASE 60 or the ASE 80 go up to 3.2metres wide and 3.5 metres high, or 3.5 metres wide and 3.2 metres high. Schuco says this makes their door the largest possible on the market.  This is not strictly true as there are doors such as the Panoramah system that go up to 27 square metres per panel. But if you take the combined width and height then, yes, Schuco has engineered a door at a quite impressive size capability.

Importantly, we need to focus on the interlock.  The UK home improvement market has significantly over-marketed the thin interlock message.  Our advice is it does not matter.  There are some outstanding doors on the market with thicker interlocks than the 20mm found on minimalist structurally bonded sliding doors.

Obviously, size governs the thickness of interlock available on these and other dry-glazed doors.  So while your local Schuco installer may market the 40mm sight lines this does not mean it comes with any size door.  You will more likely get the 92mm interlock on the biggest size doors for strength and wind loading. However, for most standard size doors at say, 2200mm high the 40mm interlock comes as an option.  A Schuco door is an engineering masterpiece and the thicker sightlines at the interlock should in no way put you off. Look at the overall product and, importantly, slide it to see just how well it works.

Features of the Schuco ASE 60 and Schuco ASE 80.HI Sliding Doors.

As you would expect with any Schuco product, you get insulated aluminium sections, durable powder coated finish, security testing to the latest standards as well as exceptional weather performance.  Therefore, we focus on other features of the door and around the design in particular.

First of all, one of the reasons the Schüco ASE 60 and 80 won the Red Dot Design Award is overall appearance.  A clean, sleek appearance is what this door offers homeowners and a great selling point for installers.  Flush locking points, concealed grooves and a better-looking door when open is just a start.

When you see the doors, take a look at the locking system. These doors come with a near flush lock design. Open other quality doors and you’ll find the locking systems is relatively prominent.  While this does not matter too much, the Schuco doors come with a more seamless appearance whereby the major lock components are less visible. As well as this many of the components in the sliding panels are also hidden from sight thanks to a panel that closes the profile off neatly.  Even better with Schuco doors is the ability to have the vents sliding on the outside or the inside of the frame. This comes about as a result of the doors being symmetrically identical.

Also on the locking system, you get a choice of where the bolt pins locate.  You get the option of the bolt pins fixed in the vent frame as well as the standard option of going into the outer frame.  Again this offers a cleaner overall design to the whole product with less visible hardware.

The Schüco SmartStop and SmartClose are other excellent design features. Relatively new amongst sliding doors is a soft close mechanism. While we’ve never heard of people slamming their sliding doors shut, Smart Close does slow the door down gently as it approaches the frame.  Then the Smart Stop feature draws the door slowly into the closed position.  As a result, you get a more intuitive door panel that appears to bring itself into the frame, adding an extra feature to the overall closing process.

Schuco ASE 80.HI

Other products to compare with the Schuco ASE 80.HI and ASE60.

For anyone looking to buy a premium brand sliding door, it makes sense to compare some products.  There is no bad door on the market, but if you’re looking for similarly engineered doors and with comparable aesthetics, we suggest the following doors at similar price points. There are, of course, many different sliding doors on the market, from many different brands, but we consider these to be comparable in terms of sight lines, engineering, features and brand.

1.  Reynaers Hi-Finity Sliding Doors.

The Reynaers Hi-Finity sliding doors is another excellent sliding door with impressive engineering and design. Reynaers offers another door with an excellent brand reputation as well as another door going up to 3.5-metre sizes.  The Hi-Finity also comes with a 35mm interlock as well as some intelligent design features like Schuco.

2.  Sunflex SVG 30 Sliding Door.

Also worth looking at is the Sunflex SVG30 re-engineered sliding door.  This particular door comes with a 30mm interlock, an excellent low threshold as well as being a Sunflex brand.  Well worth looking at.

3.  Air 500 and 600 LS.

The air 500 or 600 LS sliding doors are also re-engineered by Everglade Windows with an excellent surface finish, 25-year warranty and luxury door hardware options.

4.  Solarlux Cero Doors.

We think the Solarlux Cero is excellent and another German-engineered sliding door for the home.  Great in use, slim to look at and with the outstanding build quality.  The range of colours is also excellent as is the thermal performance and quality of the door components.

5.  Reynaers CP130 and CP155 Sliding Doors.

Alongside the more expensive Hi-Finity door, we suggest the CP130 or CP155 products.  With a very high specification, four threshold options and a very good system, these are another brand of sliding doors to compare with the Schuco.

6.  Origin OS-77 and OS-44 Sliding Patio Doors.

The latest generation of inline sliding patio doors from Origin offers the legendary Origin build quality with a 20-year guarantee. These doors also come at very fast lead times for those wishing to complete a build project quickly.  You also get excellent self-levelling running gear and premium quality door furniture. These are also well work looking at and comparing with Schuco.

Schuco ASE60 sliding doors review.  Conclusion.

With any Schuco door, you get elegant, functional and highly reliable doors.  These are not the cheapest doors on the market, but they are some of the best.  While they don’t have the one-manufacturer supply route of products by Sunflex, Origin, Centor or Air doors, they do come through a highly trained network of manufacturers, supplied to good installers all over the UK.

The SmartClose and SmartStop features are great to see on a quality sliding door. We especially like how this door is also designed to be sophisticated yet easy to make, thanks to its modular and scalable profile system. The hidden hardware, impressive sizes and great thermal performance are other great design features Schuco is well known for. And even if you need big doors needing the thicker door mullion, our advice is, it does not matter. A Schuco door will enhance any home with a luxury sliding door that is engineered to last and is outstanding in many ways.  And as always, buying large sliding doors offers more benefits in aluminium than in PVCu.

Stellar Aluminium Windows Review

The Stellar aluminium windows review tells you everything you need to know about the new window from Epwin Windows. Comprising casement windows, you’ll also find in the collection, residential doors, sliding doors and bifolding doors. We explain what you get with the system and its features and benefits. We also point out a number of things Epwin, we think, missed out on this new system, as good as it is.

Stellar Aluminium Windows Review

Information about Stellar Windows and Doors

There are claims that that aluminium window and door systems have not really developed with little innovation. We don’t agree.

Epwin Windows also says the same about its new Stellar windows and doors. They’re new, look different from other systems, and come from a very reputable and experienced business. Epwin’s capacity to supply Stellar extrusions is substantial and includes a polyester powder paint plant. They also have the latest machines and innovative ways of streamlining the production of extrusions, such as inserting thermal breaks and gaskets.

So while we don’t agree at the lack of innovation with aluminium windows and doors over the years, one area where aluminium has not developed that well is the improved fabrication and a more ‘fitter-friendly’ installation. Aluminium windows remain mostly hand-crafted products and one of many reasons for choosing them over uPVC.

If you’re a homeowner choosing your new windows and doors, how easy your windows and doors are to make or fit isn’t a concern. However, for the fabricator and installer, it matters. The glazing industry respects the views of its installers. If they find a product hard to fix and awkward to glaze, this feedback is invaluable.

Stellar black aluminium windows

The Stellar Product Range

We focus on the window product in the Stellar aluminium windows review. Within the entire collection you will also find residential doors, a sliding door and the existing bifolding door.

The windows and doors, as well as the lift and sliding door, are entirely new. Epwin says the system offers slim sight lines, the manufacturing and installation benefits, reduced waste, improved sightlines and integrates across the various products in the collection.

Stellar Aluminium Doors come designed mainly for the residential market and have the same flush aesthetic. These are suitable for single back or side doors, porch doors and double French doors. Of course, they integrate well with the window suite, creating bigger patio doors such as patio doors with sidelights.

The sliding door offering offers the desirable lift and slide action, and we will be reviewing this product fully at a later date alongside the residential doors.

Stellar Aluminium Windows

Studying the fabrication and technical manual reveals a suite of sections all of which feature a deep thermal break and entirely flat in appearance. Therefore, the Stellar windows collection is very much modern-focused. You won’t find any traditional profiles available across other brands such as Aluk windows or the Smart Systems Alitherm range. Here we think Epwin have missed out on an opportunity.

Integrating more traditional profiles is not difficult to do and we hope this is part of a future update. In fact, many window installers, especially in suburban houses often choose a combination of a profiled outer frame and a flat sash arrangement. It looks good and it works.

With the Stellar range, you get the option of two flush casement window options. One of these has the flush detail on the outside only, with a square stepped detail on the inside. The other has a flush detail internally as well. Epwin says it’s the only fully flush casement window on the market but Origin’s OW-80 has been on the market for several years already.

Available are three different outer frames. WQ01 is the slimmest, with a medium option WQ02 also used as the outer frame in the door. WQ03 is the deepest outer frame. In the real world and especially for window replacements, the medium and deep are the more likely to be used. The slim will only really work in new installs.

You also get two sash options, for the fully flush and the ouside only. Then there are six different mullion options. What you choose depends on aesthetics, window sizes and overall inertia and strength needed.

With six different beads for double or triple glazing, there is also a range of ancillary profiles. These include a good range of cills, bay poles, corner posts, frame extensions for trickle vents and other components needed to suit all manner of installations.

How slim are Stellar Windows?

Epwin says on its website:

“Stellar is at least 30% slimmer than the main competing systems.”

As this is a flush casement product, it makes sense to compare it against some other flush casement windows on the market.

We’ve looked at the fabrication and technical manuals for Stellar and other systems. The Smart Systems Alitherm 500 window is thinner. The Senior Systems Series 2 product is as well. Reynaers CS68 and SL38 windows also come out slimmer. All of these systems offer a flush casement detail and subject to the frame/vent/mullion combination chosen, most are slimmer.

Therefore we can only assume that the ‘competing systems’ Epwin mentions are the Origin OW-80 window or the Warmcore product as these two have thicker aluminium profiles. Stellar is a system designed with flush sashes, therefore, we’ve compared it to other popular systems with flush sashes in the table above. However for balance, whilst sightlines are important, overall aesthetics matter more to the buyer. And the Stellar aluminium windows collection is an attractive product overall.

The pre-gasketed system

We were sceptical of a pre-gasketed system when Aluk introduced the C70S earlier this year. Epwin has done a far better job of marketing the message and providing more benefits. The pre-inserted gaskets method works well in reducing fabrication time. First of all the windows do not need wedge gasket typical of other systems. This is bound to save a lot of time glazing the window and provides a neater and better-looking window overall.

Another benefit is neater gasket ends and hopefully less unsightly overlapping where vertical and horizontal gaskets meet. Again homeowners only see a possible visual benefit, but largely unaware this feature even exists. Our view is only the glazier benefits in reality. Experienced fabricators (and especially those making more than one system) are used to making different products in different ways. Arguably this isn’t a substantial selling point to them. However, we encourage people to go glaze a Stellar window. The difference over traditional methods is evident.

And all of this also comes down to a brilliantly designed glazing bead. Doing away with the conventional leg found on other casement windows, Stellar beads feature a rounded design above the leg that clips into the frame or vent. We’ve seen this, it works and once again will make a difference in the speed of glazing windows. It’s as easy as putting in a upvc bead. The bottom beads only need fitting with WG10 seal cord which appears to offer protection from water pooling on the bottom bead, given its alternative design to regular window beads.

Other great features of Stellar Windows

When putting together this Stellar aluminium windows review, its difficult to not focus on the benefits of this system to the trade rather than the end-user. The fabrication and fitting benefits do stand out more than the reasons for a homeowner to choose the system.

The locking system comprises fast-to-fit espagnolette locks and therefore don’t need additional shoot bolts. Reduce the hassle of corner ties – you won’t need as many. What’s more, your stock levels will be easier to manage because many parts are consistent across the suite. Be aware the flush sash has the handle fitted after it’s glazed. For those used to getting their window handles fitted on their windows, it’s a change. You’ll need to fit the handle last and also seal the back of the handle to the bead.

The ingenious reverse butt joint on this system means Stellar windows do away with dummy sashes for consistent sightlines. Cleverly designed, they achieve the same look without using additional profiles.  For the trade, it’s simpler to make and cost-effective. Windows with multiple panels will be faster to put together too. There is obviously less stockholding and material handle. For the homeowner, it should work out a cheaper window, using less material than other systems on the market.

The flexibility of Stellar windows is another bonus. We like how you have the option of mechanical or crimped corners. The components used in the corners are less than other systems.

Colours and options available with Stellar Windows and Doors

As you’d expect from a modern 70mm deep aluminium window you get all the RAL colours and it’s great that Epwin includes the textured powder-coated finish. Few people buy it due to the lead times, but it’s a great finish.

Standard colours include RAL9003 white which we think is a great choice of white over the very common RAL9910 and RAL 9010. It’s a softer more creamy colour and looks good with the flush design. You’ll also find the expected RAL 7016 popular grey and a grey/white dual colour combination.

Then there are a range of non standard colours such as cream, a lighter and darker grey, brown and black.

The use of Yale hardware (like the Origin OW-80 window) throughout the system is also a good move as it is a familiar security brand for the end-user. The Yale Lifetime Security Guarantee is also a selling point for the homeowner. But! The windows we understand need fitting with the appropriate PAS-24 compliant hardware.

Furthermore, we like how the profiles are designed with flat rebates with fewer grooves for the dirt to get trapped. The window looks pretty on the inside compared to products having a conventional wedge gasket.

There are manufacturing differences between a standard window and one needing a PAS24 specification. The system generally requires the fitting of glazing/bridge packers on glazing. These need positioning at the hinge and locking point positions. Evidently, the tested window is different from a standard model.

Also available with the system is three cill sections at 100mm, 150mm and 200mm. These are deep cills at 36mm and 46mm including the cill upstand at the back. They’re designed to replicate the look of thick timber cills. This they do quite well. Once again the Stellar system designers have thought about the fabrication. You don’t need to machine the cill for drainage.

stellar aluminium windows and doors

Stellar Aluminium Windows Review – Conclusion

We’ve seen the window, we’ve studied the fabrication and technical manuals and it’s an excellent window system and worth considering by fabricators and installers. Glazing the window is a breeze and for the trade, a huge benefit. We’ve not touched much on the colour, security and hardware options in this Stellar aluminium windows review. The reason for this is there is nothing radically different compared to other systems on the market.

We’d like to see more ‘real-world’ published performance figures. Marketing is great at giving the impression of the lowest U-Values and high security. What marketing rarely mentions is what configuration of product and its specification achieves its test results. We also don’t yet see the company or the product on the Secured by Design website so presume it’s yet to be registered, if there is any intention to do so – and this is not essential.

However, there are areas where we think Epwin could have done better. The doors and windows don’t go wide or tall enough to accommodate the large floor to ceiling glazing. There is no dedicated steel-look vent/frame option on the windows either. We would have preferred to see a conventional casement design – not everyone loves a flush casement window. It will be interesting to see how installers take to the system, especially as few are loyal to a complete suite. We all know many sell windows from one brand, doors from another.

More information about Stellar Aluminium.

Overall, our Stellar aluminium windows review shows this to be a very well designed and attractive windows collection. Epwin addresses well-known frustrations with making and fitting aluminium windows too. The trained eye sees the fabrication and installation benefits of the product straight away. It is clear the team at Epwin has created a good residential window, given the people behind the product and the company experience and background.

Fabricators and installers will see advantages in making and selling Stellar. There is a lot of competition in terms of service and products from brands such as Origin, Reynaers, Smart Systems and Aluk. Some of these systems companies are outstanding at getting their brand across to the homeowner. We think what Epwin needs to do now is get the retail message across better.

Buying Cortizo Sliding Doors

Cortizo Sliding doors offer modern patio doors designed with the latest technology, engineering and slim sightlines. However, buying Cortizo products in the UK can confuse the homeowner as well as the installer. In this article, we provide information about Cortizo as a system as well as their range of sliding doors.

Buying Cortizo Sliding Doors

Information about Cortizo Sliding Doors

Cortizo is a substantial systems company. The Cortizo name is very well known, especially in Europe and globally. The entire product range covers not just sliding doors. You will also find windows, residential doors, curtain walling and panel systems. Also available are balustrades and even PVCu products.

For sliding doors, there are 12 different models, although just two are widely available for homeowners and installers. These are the Cor-vision Sliding door and the Cor-Vision Plus sliding door.

Both the Cortizo Cor-Vision and Cor-Vision plus models use the structurally bonded method of upper-tier sliding doors. The bonded glass and the slim interlock are two features making Cortizo doors popular. Another is their contemporary look and the many ways to customise them.

Generally, these cutting-edge doors come only as an inline sliding door without a lift and slide option. You also get insulated aluminium profiles, a durable powder-coated finish and quality locking systems.

Where you can use Cor-Vision sliding doors

You will find these doors mainly marketed at the new extension market. However, we’ve seen many installations of these doors, replacing old patio doors.

As a result, these doors are ideal for both replacement and new projects. Their slim lines, low thresholds, square and modern appearance make these suitable if you want a minimalist and latest-generation product.

With two up to six panels, depending on the configuration, these fine European doors work well in both modern or traditional houses.

Understanding Cortizo sliding doors

Finding information about Cortizo doors is difficult when trying to obtain consistent information about the product. The reason for this is that many major manufacturers use the Cortizo system but rebrand it. The number of suppliers selling this brand under a different name appears to outnumber those selling as Cortizo doors.

Therefore, we provide a list of just a few companies using the Cortizo sliding door but rebranded.

  • Origin Global with their OS-20 Artisan Sliding Door.
  • Everglade Windows selling the Air 20 SL product.
  • Arkay Windows using the Infiniglide name.
  • Architectural Vision Systems using several Cortizo products.
  • Slimline Aluminium under the SL20 Classic range.
  • Perfect Crystal using the PC20
  • Home Hub Group using the Serenity brand name

The very important thing to consider is there is nothing wrong with buying a rebranded Cortizo slider. Origin, Everglade and Arkay Windows are just three of many outstanding manufacturers offering expertly-crafted sliding doors. They offer a different set of personalisation options, perhaps enhanced locks and handles. We also know companies such as Architectural Vision Systems offering an excellent steel-look version of the Cortizo door.

Skyglaze in Surrey was the first company to introduce Cortizo Cor-Vision doors to the UK. They’ve also done substantial and noteworthy work helping Cortizo develop the product better.

Therefore, and as with any substantial investment in glazing, do your research or contact us for help and advice. What you will get with Cortizo Sliding Doors are exceptional sliders and a contemporary, highly-engineered product. The slim lines, quality glass and excellent components create a door of excellent proportions with smooth slide action.

Finally, the 20mm interlock and slimline sliding doors remain heavily marketed. Remember it’s only two or three panel doors truly benefitting from a slim mullion. Four panel doors meeting in the middle always look thicker.

Cor-Vision Sliding Doors.

The Cor-Vision product is more popular. First of all, is the slimline 20mm mullion – arguably its best feature. Available from one up to six sashes and with single, double or triple tracks, the Cor-Vision provides a slimline sliding door for most residential projects. There is also an open corner version. Also, with the design, it’s possible to fix these doors giving a near frameless appearance. For new extensions, these doors can also slide into a wall pocket, disappearing when fully opened.

For door sizes, these doors go up to around 2.5m wide and up to 3m high. While these are the stated figures, some manufacturers offer these or reduced sizes. The reasons for this vary but mainly down to handling, transport or cost. Generally, this model goes up to 320kg, enough for most patio door sizes.

You will find this door typically double glazed with laminated or toughened safety glass. With glass thicknesses up to 30mm, these doors only come double glazed. Triple glazed requirements mean moving to the Plus model.

With most models of the Cor-Vision, you get a five-point lock integrated within a recessed handle. All doors come tested and designed by Cortizo for the suitable air, wind and water weather ratings.

The Cor-Vision Plus sliding door

The Plus version is broadly the same but differs in several areas. First of all, is the mullion. At 25mm it’s slightly thicker but a small difference bearing in mind the large sizes used for most patio doors. The profile thickness of the doors is greater too, for structural integrity as this door comes capable of much bigger sizes.

Then you get the glass up to 54mm thick, meaning triple glazing options when needed.

It comes with the same number of panel options. Tracks are limited to one or three. This means you get the option of a single slider and fixed pane, three and four panel options. You also get the same five-point lock. This model also offers an automatic sliding action when used with suitable automatic door gearing. This version is really only suitable for new extensions. The automatic gearing needs concealing in the structure above with most automatic versions.

Technically, the Cor-Vision Plus goes wider and taller and with greater weight capability. Individual sliding panels go up to 4m wide and 4m tall with a maximum weight of up to 400kg.

Security on Cortizo products

This is where you need to do your research carefully. The Cortizo website doesn’t mention any specific security tests for this door. Now, this does not mean your new Cortizo product is easy to break into. And we’ve never heard of anyone doing so up to now.

We’ve also done a search on the Secured by Design Website and there’s no mention of the manufacturers we know having an SBD license for the product. Our advice to you is to speak to whoever is quoting you. Ask specifically about their product rather than the Cortizo system generally.

Most of the suppliers we’ve checked out offer their doors with the standard Cortizo lock enhanced with a high security cylinder.

Colour Options with Cortizo

Once again, we stress that every Cortizo sliding door supplier probably offers different colour and personalisation options. For instance, Origin only offers the same colour inside and out. Other suppliers may offer dual colours, anodised and even wood-effect finishes.

However, every door should come with a certified and guaranteed powder coated finish, applied to the relevant industry standards.

Cortizo sliding doors

Buying Cortizo sliding doors.

You will find Cortizo sliding doors available through many different professional suppliers and installers. To help you buy these doors correctly, we must again stress that you won’t find a ‘standard specification’ product – as so many versions and brand names of this door exist. However, we list below some things to consider and questions to ask of your Cortizo sliding doors provider.

Check what locking systems, door cylinders and handles come with your doors.

Cills and accessories, as well as ancillary profiles, may vary from supplier to supplier.

For new build extensions and renovations, establish whether a trickle vent is available – not every door comes with this option.

Remember the full choice of colour options won’t be available with every product.

There is nothing wrong with buying a door under a different name. Most professional suppliers will happily declare it’s a Cortizo System.

Guarantees on these doors vary from supplier to supplier.

The low or flush threshold comes with these doors but check with the supplier for drainage of water.

We love these products and suggest you consider them alongside other modern patio doors. However, just like all structurally bonded doors, they differ from conventional sliders where the glass goes in the door at the property. These doors must be factory glazed as part of their production process.

Well made and correctly installed, you’ll benefit from minimal aluminium profiles, expansive glass panels, lots of natural light and a great new living or kitchen space. You can also contact us for more information and where to buy these sliding doors in your area. Use our contact form and get in touch today.

Comparing Origin OB-72 and OB-49 bifolding doors

Origin bifolding doors now come as two models, the OB-72 and OB-49, thoroughly reviewed by us.  Therefore you now have two products to choose, both with the legendary Origin quality, brand name and guarantee.  In this article, we help you understand more about the latest Origin bifolding doors.  We also give some advice on practical considerations to help you choose the most suitable model.

Origin OB-72 and OB-49 bifolding doors

First of all, nothing changes in how these two doors come to you. Only Origin makes Origin products in their hi-tech Buckinghamshire factory. The benefits of an exclusive manufacturer are always-consistent quality, reliable lead times and extensive product support to the Origin dealer network. Choosing the best bifolding door comes down to many factors, but for brand reputation, few doors beat Origin.

You get the same insulated aluminium profiles, durable powder-coated finishes and an expertly crafted bifolding door. The paint and manufacturing warranty remains the same too.

Therefore for peace of mind, both the OB-72 and OB-49 products offer you the same. Choosing between these products comes down to configuration, sizes, colours, handle options and aesthetics. Above all, both products remain suitable for replacing old patio doors and especially useful in a new extension.

For clarity, the OB-72 model remains the Origin product with a new name. The OB-49 is new but uses the existing Origin outer frame and hardware.

Bifolding door sightlines.

With bifolding door sightlines being so important it is you’ll want to make a choice. While the OB-72 isn’t the thinnest bifold on the market, it remains one of the best selling doors. The OB-49, amongst similarly-designed and bead-glazed doors is now one of the slimmest bifolds.

The 154mm sightline at the meeting stiles of the OB-72 is drastically reduced to just 110mm on the OB-49. This new slimline bifold beats Schuco, Reynaers, Sunflex, the entire Express Bifolds range and many other brands too. You need to compare the two doors side by side to see the differences in visible aluminium.

Therefore, if the visible face thickness of the closed doors matters to you, the Origin OB-49 is the one to go for. It’s also a worthy contender on sightlines to the other excellent brands we mentioned above.

The Smart Systems Visofold 6000 remains the thinnest bifold door if you want the least visible aluminium. While this is a very good door from a great systems company, the Origin door gives you better components, handles and more customisation options. The lead times are also faster with standard colours on the legendary Origin Your Lead Time Not Ours service.

Classic vs Contemporary looking doors

The next difference between the doors is of overall appearance. The OB-72 gives you a 72mm wide door sash with a chamfered bead. This means the door has a flat aesthetic outside and slightly rounded on the inside.

The OB-49 uses a 49mm sash with the same flat appearance outside and a square flat bead on the inside. For you, this means you’ll get a flatter interior look with the slimmer model, but both doors look great in both traditional and contemporary houses, new extensions and even interiors.

As with any major investment in the home, go see the doors, and compare the aesthetics. In our view, the classic styling of the OB-72 has never affected sales or the product. You may also find the original bifold more suitable if your property has traditional aluminium or even PVCu windows with a chamfered design on the inside.

Open Corner bifolding doors

Your bifolding door configuration and sizes

Both Origin OB-72 and OB-49 bifolding doors work for all standard sizes and different configurations. The OB-72 model will be your only choice when designing open corner bifolding doors and for doors taller than 2500mm high.

The slimmer OB-49 model comes with the same maximum 1200mm width but won’t go as tall. A while back, Origin increased the height of their larger model up to 3m high. For clarity, fixed corner posts are fine with the slimmer door, moving/open corner posts only with the OB-72.

Customising Origin OB-72 and OB-49 bifolding doors

Personalising an Origin product remains one of the strengths of the product. Both products come with excellent options, but the newer bifold understandably has fewer colour and hardware options. It’s easier to explain what you don’t get with the OB-49 that you do with the OB-72. Not available with this door are:

  • The range of woodgrain finishes
  • The traditionally styled Yale door handles with a one-piece lever/escutcheon plate or key locking slave handles
  • The bigger range of colours on fast lead times
  • The midrail option
  • Gold door furniture
  • 24mm glass thickness, only 28mm as standard

Generally, the OB-72 provides more colour options and more ways to colour match or contrast the bifold door hardware. That said, for most standard colours and designs, the OB-49 meets your needs just as well. Best of all, both models offer the great Origin feature of colour coded seals, something we’ve not yet seen on any other bifold on the market. Seven different gasket colours let you move away from the traditional black gaskets of other doors.

Steel-look bifolding doors

It’s also worth mentioning that several Origin installers customise the OB-49 as a steel-look bifold. The steel look also applies to the single and double hinged door options too.

Adding aluminium glazing bars to the outside and inside faces of the glass, neatly joining the vertical door sashes, creates a steel-styled bifolding door. Get in touch with us for more information about steel-replacement systems.

Choosing between Origin OB-72 and OB-49 bifolding doors

You’ll get an excellent product with either option. The 20-year guarantee, fast lead times and Origin windows, sliding doors and front doors complete your home improvement project.

Existing OB-72 models could even be upgraded to the OB-49. Both doors use the same outer frame and components. Therefore, at additional cost, you could replace your door panels with the new slimmer sashes and new glass too.

Extruded and designed by Garnalex, Sheerline windows and doors promise to bring something entirely new to the UK market.  Innovation, improved energy efficiency, better sightlines and a better fabricator and installer experience.  These are just some of the developments planned and promised within the system.

Furthermore, Sheerline aluminium products, when launched, will improve the traditionally perceived long lead times of aluminium and a better buying experience from start to finish.

In bringing the system to market, substantial investment in factory premises, extrusion press, staff and pro-active marketing is part of the launch period with greater control of the supply chain, a fully integrated system, customer service and marketing support.

Sheerline also promises different engineering, fabrication and processes from the current generation of aluminium systems.  Garnalex mentions the in-house extruding, new factory, dedicated software, machinery, schedules and lead times. These are all improved for better customer experience. For installers, the company promises simplified methods compared to existing systems.

Presently, Garnalex Systems is carrying out workshops for interested installers, fabricators or specifiers.  The Workshops enable interested customers to view the facilities and gain a glimpse into this brand new aluminium system.  Furthermore, the brand new design and technology behind Sheerline windows and doors call for dedicated marketing with an altogether different philosophy and approach to selling, making and fitting aluminium windows and doors.

The Sheerline product range

Presently the range comprises:

  • Aluminium casement windows
  • Residential aluminium doors
  • Associated components, hardware and accessories.

We anticipate the system offering slimline frames, flush casement options, flush casement doors and a range of ancillary profiles.  Also expected are flexible window options making the system suitable for residential contracts. We understand the products will be entirely retail-focused.

Solarlux Bifolding Doors Review

Solarlux bifolding doors are German-made premium products , available in aluminium, wood and a combination of wood inside and aluminium outside. In this Solarlux bifolding doors review we explain what you need to know about the aluminium versions; the SL82, Highline and Ecoline.

solarlux bifolding doors

Information about Solarlux Bifolding Doors

Every product made by Solarlux offers product with excellent design, engineering and high specifications.

The bifolding door range comprises 11 different models. The aluminium versions also include the SL35 and SL45, non-insulated models designed to close off patio areas, swimming pools or create internal partitions. Bear in mind, these do not meet current Building Regulations.

While Solarlux products are not the cheapest on the market, you will find a quality, design and overall functionality, clearly demonstrating the higher price. These upper-tier aluminium doors we think are good value when you look at what they give you. It is these many features we delve into in this in-depth Solarlux bifolding doors review.

Don’t just take our word for it. Solarlux mentions architects like Foster and Partners using their products. Established and expert home improvement companies also choose Solarlux as their luxury offering. Some of the best installations on television or award-winning projects often feature Solarlux products.

Solarlux manufacturing and installation quality.

Solarlux designs and manufactures their products. It’s their system, their design and nobody else makes it. For you the homeowner, it’s another clue to what goes into Solarlux doors. Every door is made in Melle, Germany.

The same benefits of sole manufacturers apply to Solarlux. Consistent quality, the same manufacturing processes and no variation from one factory to another. This can be an issue with other manufacturers buying bars of aluminium and accessories from aluminium systems companies. Doors are certified and tested to the security and weather performance standards. The powder-coated or anodised colours are professionally applied by certified applicators. CE Marking and extensive cycle testing also feature prominently. With cycle testing of more than 20000 cycles, using the door a few times a week gives a lifespan of over thirty years.

A bifolding door is only as good as its installation. In the UK, you deal either directly with Solarlux or their network of trained ‘Solarlux Quality Partners’. We tell you more about these later in this Solarlux bifolding doors review.

Aesthetically the doors offer flat profiles, elegant and modern handles and are definitely contemporary-looking bifolds overall.

Ecoline vs Highline. What’s the difference?

The two main products you’ll come across researching Solarlux bifolding doors are Ecoline and Highline. For most projects, Ecoline is ideal. These two products are very similar in look, performance, handles and general components. They’re excellent doors.

The Solarlux Highline bifolding door differs in having a slightly deeper front to back dimensions. Therefore you get four features you don’t get with the Ecoline.

  • A triple glazed option
  • Better U-Values
  • Improved sound insulation should you want it
  • Larger door panel sizes.

Sightlines are the same as is the same smooth and light slide and fold action.

All glass SL82 by Solarlux

The latest Solarlux SL82 is award-winning and features from an all-glass appearance when viewed from the outside. Few bifolds on the market offer the flush glass design. One product that’s similar is the GG65 by Folding Sliding Door Company. However, you’re not really comparing like-for-like.

The SL82 uses a bonded glass design with the front pane of glass stepped past the inside pane. Glass overlaps the minimalist aluminium profile. Essentially, a layered glass design giving an edge-to-edge, all-glass look. Even better with this door is the 8mm visible aluminium surrounding the glass. Not only does this protect the glass edge but also creates a very pretty picture-frame surround. It’s worth seeing this door for its impressive appearance.

Complete with recessed floor track for barrier-free living, integrated SL lock plus the freedom to open/close glass panes from outside and you have a superior bi-folding system.

What makes Solarlux bifolding doors different?

A consistent message across our website and the product review you read is that there is no bad bifolding door on the market. However, where they differ is who makes them, the overall supply chain and correct installation. Any folding sliding door comes designed for reliability and most meet security and weather performance standards. You also get similar specifications on the aluminium profiles themselves, the paint finish, glass and components.

So what makes these doors different? The answer lies in the things you won’t see on brands such as Aluk, Smart Systems, Origin, Reynaers and even Schuco. It is the finishing touches and engineering. The perception that German cars are better engineered also applies to a German door. Here is what you get with Solarlux.

Innovative door panel catches

Solarlux calls these Comfort Snap Panel Catches. Different from the magnets you see on virtually every other mainstream door, Solarlux uses an entirely different design for the catches holding the panels together.

They come designed for convenience, ensure the doors engage sequentially and just look so much better than a magnet.

An always clean door threshold

Look at most other bifolding door brands and you get the rollers either on or set within the threshold. Cleaning the threshold is rarely cited as factor when living with bifolds day-to-day. That said, Solarlux doors come with a clip-on section designed to make the threshold look better as well as protecting from dirt getting into the track.

Whether this feature is important is subjective. What it does highlight, however, is attention to detail with thoughtful engineering.

Hinges allowing easy cleaning of the doors

A removable hinge pin splits the door hinges in two. Then the door panels turn inwards letting you clean the inside and outside glass panels. This facility also lets you clean the door aluminium edges better too.

This is a great feature especially useful on high-level doors. Furthermore, the hinge is highly engineered meaning the hinge pin doesn’t drop out or get lost. The Solarlux video does a great job of showing some of its many features.

Between the door panels, you’ll find what also look like miniature hinges. These, Solarlux call “TWINX”. Discreet and nice to look at, these make the slim design possible by interlocking together. The benefit is better door sealing and the door seals run continuously. The door seals are another element to study if you get to see these doors. In our view, they are the best looking, neatest seals we’ve seen on any product.

Multiple low threshold options

While any well-designed bifold facilitates a low threshold, Solarlux offers more than just a standard or low option. Schuco and Reynaers bifolds offer several low threshold solutions for bifolding doors. Solarlux goes even further.

The bionicTURTLE®

The bionicTURTLE® name refers to the thermal break insulating the profiles. However, this is more than just regular polyamide.

Centrally located, bionicTURTLE® offers several benefits. One is the strength it offers to the aluminium profiles. The other is the thermal break, helping to give the product its excellent U-Values. The third is its role in providing locking points for the hardware.

An adjustable frame

While you won’t see the benefit of an adjustable frame as a homeowner, you certainly will as an installer.

Cleverly designed, the adjustable frame is different from how Schuco and other brands compensate for tolerances and adjustments when fitting bifolding doors.

Door adjustment happens in the subframe. This means only one adjustment point rather than having to work with every door panel. Another benefit is consistent sealing across the entire door set. The door also looks much neater at the frame jamb compared with other adjustable jamb bifold doors.

About the Solarlux Quality Partner

Are Solarlux bifolding doors exclusive? Locating a dealer isn’t difficult but fewer than stockist of brands like Origin, Reynaers or Schuco. Like Sunflex, Solarlux takes care in choosing their partners. We understand they fall into two categories. One is a Dealer, the other is a Quality Partner.

The Dealer is an arrangement where a reputable window company can sell and install Solarlux products. Quality Partners need more product knowledge, an exceptional showroom, more product training and the ability to finance, manage and execute more demanding installations. Importantly for the homeowner, in the event of a Quality Partner going out of business, Solarlux steps in. They’re not alone in doing this as Origin has also done the same although it’s rare.

Therefore, while every Dealer or Partner of top brands is an independent business, they nonetheless must meet the criteria set down by the systems company. After all, it’s their reputation at stake.

A look on the Solarlux website shows just six Solarlux Quality partners in the UK.

Other Products to compare with Solarlux

For us, there are only three comparable models with a Solarlux bifolding door. Whilst all bifolds, well-made and properly fitted will serve you well, we’ve chosen three other brands to compare with Solarlux based on design features, sightlines and overall engineering. The other reason we’ve chosen these is, like Solarlux, they’re only made in one factory, not by many different fabricators.

Centor Bifolding Doors

Of all the bifolding doors on the market, Centor is our favourite and you can find out why. The attention to detail on a Centor product is outstanding. From the different way it’s made, door edge finishing detail, the luxury handles, to the advanced seals, easy-clean thresholds and flyscreen systems. Centor seems to have it all.

They are by no means the slimmest bifolds on the market. However, for sheer quality, these are certainly worth comparable with Solarlux but go even further. We’ve seen just about every major bifold brand there is. Few compare to Centor.

Sunflex Bifolding Doors

Also made in Germany, Sunflex is probably a direct competitor to Sunfold. They offer the same combination of aluminium and hybrid products and have similar aesthetics. We really like Sunflex bifolding doors for the way they look, the impeccable slide and fold action and the same large door sizes.

Duteman FD85 or Alumil SF85

While not necessarily falling into the category of a single manufacturer, the Alumil product we think is an excellent bifold. Bold hardware details, modern design and the impressive 1.5m wide door panels. Importantly, Alumil doors are good enough for Express Bifolds, arguably one of the best businesses in the UK today, to adopt it within their product range as the XP Vision.

You’ll also find the same product, the FD85 bifold, made to a very high standard by Dutemann, supplied through their network of installers. Worth checking this door out too.

Buying Solarlux Doors. Conclusion

Both Solarlux Ecoline or Highline products are desirable, luxurious and technically advanced. Moreover, with excellent thermal insulation, impeccable attention to detail and a prestige name, as a homeowner, you really are putting one of the very best door brands in your home. As an installer, selling Solarlux is one way of demonstrating reputation, service and trust.

We’ve not mentioned much about colours and options in this review as there are numerous. Solarlux goes beyond regular RAL/Interpon powders offering all manner of colours and finishes. Security is excellent, performance is top-notch and reliability is guaranteed when properly fitted.

Finally, the only way to appreciate why Solarlux doors look, feel and genuinely are different is to see one. Study the detail and when you open, close and fold a Solarlux door, you’ll understand why these doors more than justify their higher price.

Doors and Windows of the last decade

$

2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the Aluminium Trade Supply Website so we’ve had ample time to look at windows and doors of the last decade and see how things have changed. We’ve also been in the glazing sector for 32 years and used our experience to compile our top ten, whether new, emerging and resurging.  And we predict what to expect in the coming years too.

windows and doors of the decade
Steel and Steel look systems are our top product of the decade

Top Ten Windows and Doors of the decade.

The past ten years have been exceptional for the home improvement industry. However, it’s not just about windows and doors.  Home extensions, renovations and contemporary building projects have seen a great demand for all types of products used to improve a home. Kitchens, interior design, interior colours, bathrooms, building products and home furnishings.  All of these have seen changing trends.

Here are our top ten windows and doors of the last decade.

1. Steel-look doors and glazing.

The steel-look and steel-replacement systems are an enigma.  They are visually unlike other types of patio doors and windows and go against the trend.  Throughout this decade the design message was clear. Improved views, letting in the light and creating connected indoor-outdoor living through large expansive glazing.   Steel look systems are the opposite. Horizontal and/or vertical bars interrupt the glass and the view.  For doors, this trend takes us back to hinged not folding or sliding doors. That said, they are on-trend, with clean sharp lines, incredibly desirable and create quite beautiful glazing done right.

Taking inspiration from original Crittall® Windows, the last two to three years have seen phenomenal growth in steel look and steel replacement systems.  You can use these both inside and outside the home. Patio doors, internal doors, exterior or interior screens and room dividers are just some ways to add heritage or contemporary steel-look glazing in the home. In aluminium, we think Smart Systems Alitherm Heritage suite is about the best there is.  But you’ll also find Aluk and Reynaers offer similar great products.  But do your research.  We’ve also seen the horrendous results from some installers and fabricators who don’t know how to sell or make these products for the correct look. Contact us for information on products and where to buy.

The popularity of steel look systems has seen new specialist installers and manufacturers emerge too. They now offer some standout products in this Art Deco style.  Only Crittall® Windows is the real deal with the best sightlines, aesthetics and longevity. However, the phenomenal trend for steel-styled glazing and the excellent cheaper aluminium derivatives makes steel-look systems our top product of the decade. We also think aluminium steel-look has given Crittall® themselves greater visibility in some respects.

2. Bifolding Doors

The bifolding door remains one of the best patio doors for the home.  It didn’t make our top spot as it’s now a mature and well-known product.  However, bifolding doors have developed. The latest generation of doors are slimmer than before with products such as the Origin OB-49, Schuco ASS70, Sunflex and others offering less visible aluminium and more glass. There is also the incredible Sieger door currently holding the top spot as the thinnest bifold.  Or you can go completely frameless with a slide and stack model from Frameless Glass Curtains, with an altogether different folding door experience in the home.

Buying Cortizo Sliding Doors

With a bifold, there is no better way to connect the inside to the patio or garden.  Bifolding doors remain popular in home extensions and as a replacement for dated patio doors. For us, two brands stand out in our windows and doors of the last decade.  Origin Frames Ltd continues to be the best known brand amongst homeowners in the same way people think of Everest for double glazing.  The marketing and growth of Origin as a business and the calibre of its dealer network is unrivalled in our view. Their marketing, dealer support and consistent growth with even more competition over the last then years are exceptional too.  But Schuco also deserves credit.  Schuco carries out nowhere near the business-to-consumer marketing of Origin yet remains the go-to luxury brand for many installers and is known by homeowners.  We must also give credit to Smart Systems for their Visoglide door and Aluk for theirs. Another two brands with little direct engagement with the end-user market yet two of the best selling trade bifolds in the UK.

3.  Sliding Doors

The latter part of this decade sees sliding doors gaining a new-found love.  The benefit of sliding doors is less frame, bigger glass panels and better views.  While sliding doors won’t open up an entire opening like bifolds, they’ve grown in popularity, brands and functionality.  Every major systems company over the last decade has both slimmed down and improved their sliding products keeping in line with current trends for minimalist doors and expansive glass panels.

Sliding doors provide larger doors at impressive panel widths and heights. You also get the benefit of excellent engineering, making even the heaviest doors effortless to slide.  Other innovations with sliding doors are soft and smart close technology such as those found in the latest Schuco ASE 60 slider.

4.  Cortizo Systems

It wasn’t that long ago that nobody knew of Cortizo. Specifically for sliding doors, our fourth place goes to Cortizo Systems. Cortizo is the system of choice for many manufacturers and installers when it comes to the now well-known sliding door with the 20mm interlock and structural glazed construction.  Some of the best known aluminium names such as Origin, Air, Architectural Vision Systems, Infiniglide and many others use either a standard or customised Cortizo door as their minimalist patio door.

From relative obscurity, Cortizo systems are still not that well known in the UK for their other products.  However, for slim sliding doors, Cortizo has not only cracked the market but boosted the resurgence and new-found love for sliding doors.  Undoubtedly, the Cortizo product is also responsible for creating a near-obsession with thin interlocks in sliding doors, despite their limitations, higher price and installation complexity.

5.  Aluminium Doors

Composite doors will always be hard to beat for front doors and these are better than the foam-filled products with Solidor, Endurance and other products having solid timber cores and some gorgeous door colours and designs.  However, our issue with composite doors is longevity.  One needs only to look at the doors provided in new build developments to see how cheap versions of these fade, fall apart and not built to last.

At the other end of the spectrum is high-end timber and hybrid doors from specialist manufacturers and designers such as Urban Front or Pirnar. Aluminium doors now sit somewhere in the middle and came about this last decade.  Yes, they were here before with brands like Monarch Monaframe doors with designer glazed panels. This time they’re better, more secure, with incredible design features.  Hidden hinges, automatic door locks, automation and designer hardware, are all commonplace in aluminium front doors as well both traditional and modern styles.

However, the stand out aluminium door has to be the pivot door. Different, beautiful, a sight to watch open and shut.  Pivot doors also come at incredible sizes. Aluminium front doors and the pivot door take number five in our doors and windows of the last decade.

Culmax aluminium doors.

6.  Flush Casement Windows

Aluminium windows have not seen the development of their PVCu counterparts. Technically there isn’t a huge amount you can do with aluminium. PVC offers more scope for decorative mouldings and finishes such as with sash windows. Windows are constantly working to be thinner and more energy-efficient. However, flush casement windows finally came to aluminium.

Commercially we’ve seen windows opening out as balconies, parallel opening windows and developments in hybrid products such as fibreglass windows by Senior Architectural. However, one development started by Origin with their OW-80 product this decade is flush casement windows.

Popular with PVCu products already, aluminium windows have developed into flush casement models.  The success of flush casement aluminium windows remains to be seen. Stellar Aluminium Systems have hit the market with their version. Garnalex Systems are launching Sheerline early this year.  It remains to be seen whether installers will fall in love with windows in the way they’ve embraced sliding and bifolding doors.  Nonetheless, flush casement windows arrived this decade and look here to stay.

7.  Lantern Roofs, Skylights and Rooflights

Origin OS-77 Sliding Door

The extension market remains responsible for the popularity of all manner of patio doors as well as windows or floor-to-ceiling glazing. But no extension is complete without a lantern roof, skylight or rooflight.  The last decade has seen huge improvements in roof glazing products when previously it was limited to specialist suppliers and constructing a dated conservatory.

With slimmer products based on facade glazing technology, walk-on glass rooflights, opening rooflights and even those with built-in blinds. Lantern roofs, skylights and rooflights have in the last decade developed into highly desirable products.

8.  The Colour Grey and Special Colours

It’s not that long ago that special colours were only for commercial glazing contracts, shopfronts and cladding.  Anyone buying windows between 2000 and 2010 had quite limited stock colour options of white, black, silver or brown. Special colours took forever and were expensive.

We’ve now moved away from magnolia in our rooms and white, silver and brown for our aluminium windows.  Grey is by far the colour of choice for windows and doors with all manner of shades, textures and options.  However, a greater choice of powder-coated colours isn’t the only innovation.  In the last ten years, we’ve seen woodgrain aluminium and foiled aluminium such as the excellent Alumina Bifolding Door.

For steel look systems it has to be black and for modern extensions all manner of colours in between. As a result of aluminium itself growing in popularity so have colours. Therefore the colour grey and special colours take our 8th spot in doors and windows of the last decade.

9.  Express Bifolding Doors

The last decade has also seen developments in stand out companies as well as products.  There are many great systems and businesses that would make this list extend to hundreds. However, Express Bifolding Doors is, for us, one of the very best examples of how buying windows and doors has changed compared to the last decade.  Express Bifolding Doors takes number nine in windows and doors of the decade. Express has played a big part in elevating the experience of buying doors and windows.

Thankfully we’ve mostly moved away from ridiculous small window samples in the home, high-pressure calls, commission-only salespeople and questionable sales tactics.   Our work takes us all over the UK seeing businesses, products, showrooms, marketing and sales. Express Bifolding Doors has arguably the best showroom experience in the country, an excellent website and marketing message.  Granted, not everyone has the Express space, size or budget. Many even sell exactly the same systems.  Companies like Express and smaller reputable businesses have brought a new and much-improved way to buy doors and windows.  It wasn’t that long ago homeowners didn’t even know what system or brand they were buying. Now many are aware before they even get in touch to discuss their project.

10.  Luxury Door Brands

schuco bifolding doors review

Taking number ten in our list is the greater perception homeowners and the fenestration sector has around brands.  We frequently say there is no bad product on the market. Most windows and doors are designed to meet current standards, are safe, secure and weather resistant.

In the last ten years, we’ve seen more brand focus and brand perception than ever before. Where previously we just bought “any” windows, now as with other consumer goods we are looking at the name, the company behind it as well as the product.  Those in the trade do the same. Some glazing professionals may regard Smart Systems and Aluk as trade or builder-favourite brands to names such as Solarlux, Schuco, Reynaers, Sunflex or Centor having better quality and luxury brand perception.  The same applies to installers and providers of windows.  Many have branched out into the top end of the market where price is not the deciding factor.

Therefore as home extensions get more ambitious, customers desire ‘the best’, so the requirement for brand-specific windows and doors has grown.  We’ve seen more high-end brands in the last ten years whether due to price, reputation, specification or design. And we’ve played our part as the only website reviewing doors and windows to help homeowners and the trade.

The Aluminium Trade Supply Website. 2010-2020

The Aluminium Trade Supply Website is the biggest aluminium doors and windows information resource thanks to our independence and broad coverage.  We continue to advise and inform about aluminium products for the homeowner and trade market.  Every year we receive thousands of consumer and trade enquiries and continue to help buyers and the wider trade.  The last ten years also sees us now providing millions of pounds worth of residential and commercial referrals, putting homeowners in touch with quality installers and manufacturers.

There is greater awareness around sightlines, energy efficiency colours and security too.  Above all windows and doors are now perceived as an essential part of a home improvement project and homeowners carry out substantially more research than ever before.  Installers are also more knowledgable than before choosing to sell several brands instead of just one.  Importantly, we want our new windows and doors to provide solutions for the way we use our kitchen, living and outdoor spaces.  Aluminium continues to beat PVCu or timber when it comes to functionality in the home.

We’ve also seen the growth of consumer-focused exhibitions whether for general design, self-building as we British continue to love our homes. These exhibitions have certainly given new visibility to glazing, windows and doors in all materials.  Professional glazing businesses are now getting their products in front of the customer.

Ten Predictions for 2020-2029:

  • A greater focus on brand awareness, more dealer networks and specialist installers by major systems companies.
  • Greater and targeted marketing by systems companies to the end-user.
  • More European systems looking to enter the UK market despite Brexit.
  • Aluminium and PVCu products getting even more thermally efficient to meet changing regulations.
  • Energy efficiency and Building Regulations could see a direct link to climate change issues facing us all.
  • Home automation won’t reach windows and doors just yet.  We will still prefer a handle and key-locking method to our windows and doors instead of fingerprint scanners and automatic locks.
  • A greater focus on design, with contemporary glazing, aluminium windows and doors continuing to be desirable in the home.
  • New innovations in PVCu products looking to offer a cheaper ‘aluminium look and feel’.
  • Previously commercially-focused systems and brands will look to capture the end-user market.
  • Government spending promises should see an increase in commercial and residential construction and more glazing orders as a result.

Origin OS-77 Sliding Door Review

$

The Origin OS-77 Sliding Door by Origin now provides homeowners and Origin dealers with a more standardised aluminium door as well as a more affordable option to the structurally glazed inline sliding door. Made in the UK, brand new and designed for both new build projects or as a replacement to old patio doors.  In this review of the Origin OS-77 sliding door, we explain some of the features, compare it with other brands and tell you more about its construction and specifications.

Origin OS-77 Sliding Door

What is the Origin OS-77 Sliding Door?

With a resurgence in patio doors for the home and especially sliding doors, the latest OS-77 door, and the thinner OS-44 models offer homeowners two more expertly-crafted door options from Origin.

Like all their products, only Origin makes their doors. Therefore you not only get the well-known Origin quality and service, but you also get the renowned 20-year guarantee. The new OS-77 is not intended to replace the existing structurally bonded, slimline sliding door.  Instead, these doors address the need for the more conventionally-styled door. As a brand, Origin remains one of the best known in the UK for made-to-order aluminium windows and doors.

Like all Origin products, these new sliding doors come via a network of Approved Origin Dealers, trained and approved to sell the entire range of Origin windows and doors for the home. The range also includes bifolding doors, two types of aluminium windows, front doors, residential doors and even garage doors.

Having seen the product recently, what you get is a very attractive door with a modern square profile.  It is not intended to create large panoramic doors. This door suits standard height doors in existing openings and the typical door heights designed in most new extensions.

Why Origin products differ from others on the market.

Before we take a look at the specifics of the new Origin sliding doors, it’s worth mentioning that the introduction of these doors now provides a complete one-brand solution in the home.  Aside from a roofing system, Origin pretty much has the entire house covered.  The advantage to the homeowner is the peace of mind in who makes your doors.

While many well-made brands exist, often installers source windows from one supplier, doors from another, sliding or bifolding doors from another.  For instance, they may like to sell Aluk or Smart Systems windows but prefer bifolds from another supplier, front doors from another.  While a 10-year guarantee is commonplace with residential installations,  the warranties available from supplier to your installer vary. As a result, your supplier offers you an extended guarantee without them having the same comeback to a supplier higher up their supply chain.

Origin like other sole-manufacturers differ.  The quality of the products is consistent, the colour matching precise, the service levels steady and the lead times better.  For the trade, this means a reliable source of supply from one manufacturer.  Assuming they like the products available, the homeowner benefits too. One brand also means a single-point of guarantee and, arguably, greater peace of mind.

As recently highlighted, when an Origin dealer ceased trading, the one-source supplier also offers the rare ability for the manufacturer to step in when things go wrong.

Origin Inline sliding doors – product highlights.

First of all, these doors look modern and ideal for replacing old doors as well as for new extensions.  You get mitred door corners that look neat.  On the inside of the doors are square glazing beads. The door proportions look good and especially on dark coloured doors such as the popular grey colour.

Visually, the doors look similar to other good patio doors on the market such as Reynaers CP155 or CP130, Smart Systems Visoglide and the Schuco product too.

The doors come in a 2, 3 or 4-panel configuration as well as the option of double or triple tracks. Door sizes range from a minimum of 1.8 metres wide for smaller doors, right up to 6.6m on a three panel set.

Glass options are flexible with toughened glass as standard.  Then there are upgrades such as laminated glass, solar or acoustic glazing, switchable glass or integral blinds. With thermally insulated frames and good specification units, the doors exceed current Building Regulations for thermal efficiency.

The OS-44 sliding door.

The OS-44 is the slimmer mullion option for a slightly narrower sightline.  While the thin interlocks on sliding patio doors are heavily marketed, our advice is to look at the aesthetics of the entire door set, not just the slim interlock.

Aside from the thinner interlock at 44mm compared to 77mm, there is nothing different between the two sets of doors.

Consumers are often misled into thinking a slimline sliding door is thin everywhere. With many products, this is not the case.  Some of the best brands come with interlocks bigger than 60mm, and a smaller profile comes with size limitations too.

Therefore while a door comes with a slimline mullion/interlock, you may not be able to have it.  It’s also worth checking with what profile the door achieves its weather and security certification.

origin inline sliding doors

Comparing Origin Sliding Doors with other brands.

With today’s standards for security, weather performance or components, there is no ‘bad’ product on the market.  Furthermore, installation and how well a product is made is what creates a reliable and functional product.

However, buyers interested in the more conventional sliding door such as the Origin OS-77 or OS-44 will invariably be looking at popular brands such as the Visoglide and Visoglide Plus products, sliding doors from Aluk and Reynaers.

Therefore there is little to separate these doors with a similar aesthetic, design and construction.  Some features depend on the model specified as well as the sizes.  However, if you’re looking at any of the other brands in our table able, the Origin OS-77 or OS44 slimmer model is certainly another product to consider with them.

Hardware on the Origin OS-77 Sliding Door.

In addition to a well-made door, one of the best features of Origin is the quality of the components and hardware.  For instance, the rollers are from Ciilock Engineering.  Widely used in some of the best sliding doors in the world, Ciilock rollers on sliding doors provide the smooth and light sliding action even with heavy glass and big door panels.  Another feature of the door rollers is their self-levelling feature.  While any good installer will ensure a level and correctly-fitted track, the rollers self-adjust in the even of any imperfections on the sliding door track.  All the running gear on the latest Origin sliding doors are concealed for a neater look and a cleaner track.

Another great feature is the Blu door handles. Branded Origin, Blu hardware is meticulously made, coming in 316 marine grade stainless steel.  For the end-user, this means premium metals, durable fixings and handles built to last. The door handles are so good, they even withstand corrosive coastal environments.  The choice of Blu hardware is logical given their longevity and the overall product guarantee you get with this slider.

Available in either the OS-77 or the OS-44 is either a 500mm cranked pull handle both sides with hidden fixings. Additionally, there is an integrated lock and handle. This option provides a pull handle and the lock cylinder in one unit with a one-piece backplate.

Other Origin sliding door features.

As expected from a modern sliding system, Origin sliders come tested to the latest security and weather performance standards.  Doors meet the required security ratings and weather performance standards.

For installers, a range of accessories such as trickle vents, sub-cills and drip bars offer additional options as well as helping with varying site conditions. Glass options include units up to 36mm as well as the facility for integral glass blinds.

As powder-coated aluminium products, the doors come in any of 150 standard RAL colours or a different colour inside and out. Origin remains the best supplier in the UK for fast lead times on standard colour doors. Expect these doors on the unbeatable Your Lead Time Not Ours service.

The standard colours on fast lead times include Grey 7015 Matt, Anthracite Grey 7016 Matt, Metallic RAL 9005 and White RAL 9910 Gloss.

Origin OS-77 Sliding Door

Origin OS-77 and OS-44 sliding doors. Summary.

Origin did not bring this door to market as a game-changing product.  What they’ve done is given their installers and end-users a sliding door option where for years there wasn’t one.  Choosing an Origin OS-77 or OS-44 sliding door means an excellent brand, with excellent quality construction, durable powder-coated finishes and high quality components.  With more than sixty sliding door brands on the market, there certainly is a lot of choices. However, speak to any Origin dealer and they’ll tell you the ultra-reliable service, ability to put things right, support, training, and lead times is what sells Origin products.

The OS-77 sliding door is, ideal for any property and installation. You can use these doors as exterior patio doors, in a new porch, as a balcony door or separate a conservatory.  The OS-44 is thinner at the door interlock providing slightly bigger glass sizes and a neater overall appearance, especially on smaller door sets. But both look great regardless of the model chosen.

The brand kudos of Origin is one good reason to consider these doors as an alternative to other doors such as those by Smart Systems, Aluk or SAPA. You can also pitch Origin with sliding doors by Reynaers or a Schuco product just like the bifold. Apart from the air sliding door range having a 25-year guarantee, the lead times and the warranty and the sole-manufacturer consistent quality are other good reasons to choose this new door.  What matters too is it’s also a good-looking door with lovely slide action end-users will love and the trade can easily fit.

We’d have liked to see a lift and slide option but this might come in the future.

Stellar Windows Security and Quality

$

Stellar aluminium comes with the security expected by homeowners and giving installers confidence to sell the credentials of the product.  Already winning industry awards, the residential and light-commercial Stellar aluminium system, also has three desirable security credentials.

Understanding Stellar Windows Security

The Stellar casement window systems come as standard with quality espagnolette window locks having several locking points including shootbolts. These engage in secure window keeps.  The window handles are also of a high standard with key locking facility.  Adding to the overall window security are internal window glazing beads.

With this locking combination and other enhancements, the system now meets the following security specifications.

Secured by Design

Widely known and understood by the trade and public, Secured by Design is the official UK police security initiative. This certification does not just apply to windows and doors but other elements of buildings and developments where crime is designed out.  Any Secured by Design-accredited windows, like Stellar, undergo specific attack tests.  These tests are certified by independent third-party bodies responsible for certification and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Stellar is listed on the SBD website for their windows, residential doors and bifolding doors.

BS4873/PAS 24

Updated in 2016, BS4873 covers the design, construction and performance requirements for aluminium windows as well as external doors. This standard applies to broad range of opening options such as hinged opening or fixed windows, double or single doors as well as sliding and bifolding doors.

The BS 4873 / PAS24 Kitemark is another third-party certification. For end users it is an extra security indication that the product comes with the right components and design and high security. This standard also confirms that Stellar products meet the more recent requirements of Document Q for new build. As a result, Stellar windows security suits both the replacement of existing windows and anyone building brand new dwellings.

Adrian Crutchley, Accreditations Manager at Epwin Window Systems, said:

Delivering outstanding security and quality was an essential part of Stellar’s remit and built in from the start. These new accreditations prove that we’ve more than achieved the high levels we set ourselves.

Stellar windows security

Stellar windows security benefits for installers and homeowners

The security of windows and doors remains a key selling point. Stellar joins the ranks of other premium-brand windows offering independently certified security across their entire range of windows and doors.

Installers can sell the security merits of the systems with confidence. Homeowners get reassuring peace of mind.  Even better they can see the products and the company listed on the Secured by Design website.  All these security features combine with the slim lines, profile strength and clever design found in Stellar casement windows, residential doors, bifolding doors and sliding doors.

Garnalex joins Made in Britain Organisation

The Made in Britain organisation now has new extrusion aluminium company Garnelex as a member. Garnalex supplies all manner of aluminium extrusions to industry.  For aluminium windows the company is shortly to introduce the brand new Sheerline door and window system, promising to offer new innovative design and service levels.

Garnalex awarded Made in Britain organisation mark

What is the Made in Britain Organisation?

Made in Britain is an organisation bringing together British businesses united as authentic British manufacturers. To gain this accreditation, businesses undergo an assessment process giving an assurance of a truly British product and manufacturer. The Made in Britain organisation also provides support when needed relating to exports, sales, marketing and public relations.

To qualify for the Made In Britain membership, Garnalex has demonstrated themselves as a manufacturer in the UK. Specifically, the materials Garnalex uses under Made in Britain rules, must undergo “a substantial and transformative change” as a result of their production processes.

Furthermore, the Made in Britain organisation checks the legitimacy of their members via the SIC code. The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) registered with Companies House is a four-digit code classifying the nature of the business.

Roger Hartshorn, the CEO of Garnalex says:

Currently 190,000 tons of extruded aluminium is consumed in the UK, but only 110,000 tons is made in the UK. We plan to make a big dent in those import statistics! The raw aluminium comes from Wales, so this really is your chance to reduce Britain’s carbon footprint and buy British. We’ve spent over £9m on Garnalex’ state-of-the-art aluminium extrusion facility and we’ve integrated manufacturing, logistics and SAP with our in-house GarnerSys software for improved efficiency and outstanding product quality.

Garnalex is proud to invest in British manufacturing – our new Sheerline aluminium window and door system is designed in Britain and made in Britain. Garnalex is one of only a few aluminium companies to extrude in Britain and supply both trade extrusions to other companies and our own Sheerline window and door systems to fabricators. This investment gives us full control of the supply chain, enabling us to offer shorter lead times and first-class service.

Garnalex, therefore, joins a growing British community in the fenestration sector including SE Controls, Anglian, Epwin, Cantifix, Crittall®, Mumford and Wood, Masterframe and many others.

Why the Made in Britain logo is important

Consumers wanting genuinely British aluminium windows and doors have confidence when they see the official Made in Britain mark. The trade also benefits. Not only do they support British manufacturing but also get the sales benefits from customers wanting products made here.  And with so many European extrusions in the UK market, we see this as a genuine way to set the business apart now that the UK has left the European Union.

The new Sheerline system launches in March 2020. It promises an advanced aluminium system with a completely new design, fabrication methods and an improved way fabricators get material.  For installers, the product promises an appealing product range and desirable aesthetics, options and colours.

Garnalex offers interested manufacturers and installers the opportunity to attend Sheerline Ambassador Workshops. Get in touch to find out more about these.

Stellar bifolding door review

$
0
0

Our Stellar bifolding door review takes an in-depth look at the new aluminium bifold by Epwin Window Systems. A current-generation bifolding door designed for the home or medium-duty commercial markets.

Stellar bifolding door review and information

What is the Stellar Bifolding door by The Epwin Group?

Founded in 1976, The Epwin Group is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Epwin predominantly serves the trade, retail, social housing and construction sector. Epwin products come supplied and installed via a nationwide network of quality manufacturers and installers. In this Stellar bifolding door review, we take a look at the finer details of the product and the benefits it provides for both installers and the homeowner.

The Stellar bifolding door targets a relatively new niche in the market. That is the aluminium bifolding door with similar aesthetics to PVCu windows.  The Alumina bifolding door by Liniar is already selling well as a premium aluminium bifold with the woodgrain foils and aesthetics to match PVCu windows. Stellar now offers an alternative product with high quality aluminium windows and doors from the same brand.

Epwin says about Stellar that this door provides all the strength and performance of aluminium but with the attractive ‘softer’ detailing of PVCu. And there is a credible case for this door as many people love the aesthetics of well-designed PVCu windows. The external frame and sash upstand are available in a bevelled or sculptured finish as is the beading, to complement the style of a property’s windows. There’s also the option of a square aluminium bead for those that want it.

While different bifolding door brands come with a choice of profile aesthetic, not all consider the number of houses already fitted with PVCu windows. Several bifold door systems on the market already offer a rounded aesthetic inside or outside, similar to PVCu windows and doors.  However, where aluminium bifolding doors do differ is they don’t come with a PVCu foil. Origin bifolding doors come with a woodgrain sublimated aluminium finish as do Smart Systems Visofold doors with their woodstructure range. That said, a substantial number of houses have modern PVCu windows installed not needing replacement.

As a result, the Stellar bifold gives a credible option for matching a PVCu aesthetic with the well-known benefits of an aluminium bifolding door.

Stellar bifolding door review. Key Features.

Epwin says the Sellar bifold is developed for appearance and design flexibility. It is a well-designed and nice looking product. You get a bevelled frame and sash upstand as well as an optional square. You also get a PVCu glazing bead. There are some advantages to having PVCu beads on a door like this. First of all, you get a choice of sculptured or bevelled, as well as square aluminium versions.

One significant benefit of PVCu glazing beads is their greater ‘give’ over aluminium beads.  More flexible, PVCu beads make doors easier and significantly faster to glaze. This is because you don’t need to manually add the gasket as you do with aluminium beads. Therefore, anyone glazing a Stellar bifold will find it substantially faster than any product with aluminium beads. For the homeowner, the speed of glazing probably doesn’t matter. For the installer, having a bifold that’s easy to work with is a benefit to them.

Furthermore, PVCu glazing beads also reduce the risk of marking the paint finish with the exposed edges. This can occur at times in aluminium glazing beads cut a little oversize. Careful glazing and the right size cut beads usually don’t pose a problem. However, it is useful for the harsher or inexperienced glazier.

Just like any aluminium bifolding door, Stellar uses polyamide thermal breaks. At the moment little information is available on the choice of door profiles, cills and ancillaries available.

Another advantage of the Stellar bifold is the suitability for the door to come with PVCu cills. This further adds to the choices that come with the product.

Bifolding door configurations and options.

Stellar bifolding doors come as a two-panel to seven panel arrangement.  Door leaves come in sizes of 750mm up to 1000mm wide with a maximum sash height of 2100mm. As with any other bifold, doors open in or out, come with an access leaf and flexible folding sliding options. You also get a single or double door option as a basic hinged door.

The door is suitable to replace old bifolding doors thanks to a 70mm deep profile. This dimension is also good for the majority of other PVCu systems, mostly with the same dimension.

Stellar vs Alumina bifolding doors.

Our at a glance table shows the key features of the new Stellar bifolding door against the Alumina product – its obvious competitor. Here is how they compare. You can also read our in-depth review of the Alumina bifolding door.

stellar bifolding doors in a new extension

Stellar bifolding door review. Summary.

While the market hasn’t been desperate for a bifold that matches PVCu aesthetics, there are obvious benefits. Not everyone likes the contemporary look of many bifolds. Others have nearby windows and doors and might like the ‘softer’ look of this door.

This bifold comes with reliability and ease built-in. From the durable rollers also having a brush pile keeping the track cleaner. Hinges are secure and easy to fit/adjust. Glazing options are flexible and the door is designed to last. Arguably it could have been made slimmer. That said the sightlines fall below more popular brands like Origin OB-72 or the Visofold product. But, the market doesn’t scream out for the thinnest bifolds either.

Other systems such as Visofold do give bigger panel sizes and other doors only need three panels where Stellar requires four.  Stellar bifolds won’t give you a ramp type threshold like Alumina, having both a weather rated and Part M threshold.

However, these doors are invariably appealing to installers wanting the benefits of the PVCu profile integration and who know their PVCu products.  The look of the door will also appeal to those not necessarily after a full modern-looking door. Installers also benefit from the legendary service Epwin provides to their customers, longevity and reputation.

The Stellar Bifold door joins a now mature market and worthy of consideration alongside other brands.  The foiled finish is certainly appealing to those who aren’t convinced by sublimated wood finishes on other aluminium systems. Use our contact form for more information and where to buy.

Design features of Stellar Windows

The design features of Stellar Windows promises great design features for fabricators and installers. Supplied through a network of fabricators around the UK, They also get the longevity and reliability of supply provided by Epwin Group, one of the UK’s largest PVCu suppliers and now offering an innovative aluminium system.

features of stellar aluminium

Epwin comments on the features of Stellar Windows

Launched in 2019, Stellar has already won two G19 awards and has a very experienced aluminium team behind it. Stellar aluminium systems from Epwin Group pushes the boundaries of aluminium window and door design. Importantly, the designers behind this altogether new and different looking system have ensured fabricators, installers and end-users benefit.

You can read a full review of Stellar casement windows. The most prominent amongst the many design features of Stellar aluminium windows is how they look. Where other windows still rely on the largely unchanged method of connecting mullions and transoms, Stellar uses a patent-pending reverse butt joint. Unique and distinctively different, this joint allows windows to come together without dummy sashes or reverse rebate adaptors.

Gerald Allen, Epwin Marketing Manager says”

Most aluminium systems use dummy sashes, couplers or reverse adaptors to ensure the windows can be internally glazed. This can detract from the overall appearance of the window and uses more resources to achieve. The patent-pending reverse butt joint from Stellar overcomes this problem and ensures the slim lines are preserved and uses less materials. Furthermore, our intelligently-designed internal cleats ensure a clean joint is achieved offering superb aesthetics too.”

Epwin Group brought together a talented team of aluminium designers and product experts. With so many similar systems on the market, having seen the window, we can tell you it’s obvious the Stellar team not only looked to bring out different looking windows but also addressing common frustrations with making them. Epwin Group says about Stellar:

The brief was to develop an aluminium window and door system that harnessed the developments witnessed in the PVC-U sector and give the retail and light commercial markets exactly what they needed and had been asking for. Years of experience and extensive market research were combined with an open mind and high ideals to deliver the ground-breaking window and door system.

Stellar consists of two open-out flush casement window options and a flush residential door. The system will soon be joined by a lift and slide patio door and a bi-fold door that offers the lightweight strength of aluminium combined with the option of PVC-U beading that means it sits more comfortably in UK homes.

All products come with the option of crimped or mechanically jointed finishes offering strong design flexibility.

Gerald concludes:

This combination of market-leading factors, together with a wealth of market-first advantages are the reasons Stellar has experienced its first flush of success and is fast becoming the go-to aluminium system.”

What does Stellar mean for installers?

The reality with aluminium systems on the market is that they are very much the same – conventional casement windows. Some systems have moved towards flush casements, most offer a choice of profile options. However, all these common systems mean increased competition for installers because most offer the same brands.

Anyone taking a look at the system should notice several design firsts.

  • Matching aluminium windows and doors with the same flush casement
  • No more dummy sashes, bringing window costs down
  • A window that looks like none of the competing systems.
  • New windows outperforming most of these in sightlines and energy efficiency.

Another of the design features of Stellar aluminium is the glazing bead. The internally glazed bead designed with this system is revolutionary and finally reduces the time taken in glazing windows. The extrusions also come pre-gasketed. The bifolding door available within the Stellar collection even comes with PVCu glazing beads making this one of the fastest to glaze bifolds. You also get the desirable foiled surface finish and colours, popular with PVCu windows today. And coming soon is a brand new aluminium lift and slide patio door as well.

2020 promises a lot of new things in the aluminium fenestration sector with Stellar aluminium by Epwin Group presently capturing headlines in the window industry media. Get in touch to find out more about the system.

Coronavirus – Doors and Windows are open for Business

With the Coranavirus/Covid-19 in the headlines, what is the door and window industry doing reassure customers during these uncertain times? Like any industry right now, window and door companies across the supply chain are taking advice and putting measures in place, to protect their customers and their staff.

services to the window and door sector

Communicate with your home improvement firm online.

The door and window industry is actually quite hi-tech! While the advice is to avoid non-essential contact, it’s also possible to think and plan future home improvements online. And the window industry is well placed to do this.

Sales and Estimating Software, online brochures, virtual showrooms, live chat and more. Many businesses have the tools and expertise in place to quote you from your drawings or plans. Why not get an initial quotation based on rough sizes? You can at least plan for your forthcoming project when things return to normal.

Most in the window industry have their Facebook pages, Twitter and Instagram profiles and are there ready to communicate with you.

As we understand it, measures are in place to continue to fulfil customer orders too and we’ve heard no reports of extended lead times or problems getting material, glass, hardware or labour.

Can homeowners continue to buy doors and windows safely?

Businesses will make their own decisions on several factors as to whether to remain open. The reality is, in the last few days many have seen a downturn. Here are just some of the measures retain showrooms or factories are taking. And right now there are no restrictions on home improvements like there are for the food, drink or leisure sectors.

1. Businesses are taking extra measures with enhanced cleaning, including wiping down showroom samples after every customer visit and especially door and window handles. Premises are also being cleaned more frequently generally.

2. Offices, showrooms or trade counters have toilet facilities provided with soap, disposable paper towels and hand gel.

3. Many are happy to arrange to see you by appointment for a one-to-one consultation if you are concerned about other people coming into their premises while you are there.

4. There is no need to shake hands – you’ll get the same warm welcome.

5. Office staff, delivery drivers, fitting teams and salespeople are observing all the recommended precautions when working in customer houses.

6. Staff and fitting teams are fully briefed about the need to self-isolate and not come into work should they feel unwell.

How the window trade is adapting

With a diverse supply chain, several measures are in place already ensuring continuity of supply. As a result, we don’t know of any delays as yet with the supply of windows and doors.

Several manufacturers are making statements saying they are very much open for business and also promising all they can to keep the production of aluminium and pvcu, glass and accessories flowing to the installer.

However, the safety and well-being of visitors and staff are also important. Here’s what some in the trade are doing to work through this crisis.

Additional hand sanitisers placed in all public areas. We also know of businesses having placed signs around their premises advising of good personal hygiene practices.

As well as this additional cleaning is being carried out using antibacterial materials and also to staff keyboards, bannisters, handles and other areas of their premises in frequent contact by their staff or visitors.

We know of others no longer asking for signatures with deliveries – the purpose being to minimise touching of pens, paper, keypads or tablets.

We’ve also seen some businesses activating a live chat service.

Measures by Systems Companies protecting the public and staff.

While systems companies are also open for business, we know they have frequent training days, seminars, collection of material and visits from other businesses and people. Here’s what we know some are also doing.

Visits to system company premises are reduced to those which are urgent or necessary. Some are also stopping collections of material but doing all they can to service requests for material either through their normal or expedited delivery service.

Training and Seminars are presently suspended by some and we understand they’re exploring other methods for providing training to their installers or fabricators.

Those systems companies with additional showrooms have also suspended visits to these, others are taking steps to reduce the number of people at any one time.

Of course, many staff are now working from home where they can. This is harder for production operatives
