There are now several systems companies offering aluminium window products that are designed to replicate original steel windows.

The Smarts Heritage 47 window would be ideal as a window replacement here.
Many people have made the mistake of spoiling the aesthetics of older buildings fitted with original steel windows by replacing them with PVCu. Often these plastic windows will be fitted with internal Georgian bars in an effort to replicate the square small pane effect of the original.
Even where aluminium windows have been fitted and whether the Georgian bars like on the plastic window are internal or face applied they may not accurately replicate the aesthetics of the original.
In some properties this may not matter, however in heritage and traditional looking buildings it is important if you want to keep the original aesthetics.
Smart Systems Alitherm Heritage 47 is the latest introduction into the market offering solutions for the replacement of old Crittall Windows.
The new Alitherm 47 System is actually an excellent window. The sight lines of this new, slim and thermally efficient window really do replicate the visuals of original windows.
There are slim frame and sash sections as well as design features built into the system to mimic the look of the originals. Aesthetics are very much like for like on the Alitherm Heritage 47 System.
There are several applications where this new aluminium crittall replacement window can be used.
Old cottages, warehouses being converted into apartments, conservation areas and art deco homes are excellent examples where this kind of window could be used to provide a modern window replacement with all the original features. Cleverly there are also pivot windows available as well as side hung casements.
The replacement of old steel doors was often an issue as there was little available in aluminium to replicate the sight lines. Some companies have taken window profiles and modified them to create doors. Smart Systems also have actual door profiles available to complement this system. The door suite available is aesthetically very good indeed and provides an aluminium solution for balcony doors, rear french doors and side doors. The new steel window replacement system from Smarts is also available in their large colour range including the very attractive Sensations range of textured powder coated aluminium. It is also available in the brand new Alchemy range of anodised effect powder coated colours.
Windows feature excellent security through multi point locking, impressive 1.2 or 1.5 Wm2K U values, 24-32mm double glazed unit options and A rating.
They are further complemented with a range of traditional hardware such as monkey tail handles, bulb type handles and traditional looking peg stays typical on original steel windows.
Installers of these windows should check the suitability of “standard” double glazed units.

An example where a typical double glazed unit at the top of the window stands proud of the aluminium and glazing bead line.
These really are attractive and authentic looking windows. However it is the experience of this website in working with these slim steel replacement windows that often the standard spacer bar height of typical double glazed units may stand proud of the bead/aluminium line.
It should be made clear that many customers may not notice this. However there have been a number of cases where customers have complained that they can see the silver, black or white spacer bars proud of the aluminium line.
Glass manufacturers are not to blame as their units fall within manufacturing tolerances and industry standards. It is worth checking with your manufacturer or supplier. We recommend sourcing double glazed units from manufacturers that specialise in slim bar double glazed units such as Trefforest Glass and others where this potential problem can be avoided.
