Commercial aluminium windows, doors and framing from Kestrel Aluminium Systems have been installed at Whipsnade Zoo as part of a refurbishment project.
Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire formerly known as Whipsnade Wild Animal Park. It is credited with being a zoo devoted to the conservation of animal habitats.
Kestrel aluminium windows, automatic doors and curtain walling were installed at Whipsnade Zoo to create a new entrance and visitor centre.
In 1931 the zoo opened as the first one in Europe. Since then it has undergone an ongoing programme of refurbishment and renovation.
A new entrance area was designed and constructed that features a new ticket office, cafe, souvenir shop and of course a welcoming reception.
Buildings with high visitor numbers need to consider accessibility.
In a high traffic building such as a zoo, accessibility needs to be a consideration. Not only to provide a positive and easy user experience but also because it is dictated by current Building Regulations.
Automatic doors were provided to the main entrance that bi-part with sensor activation. Not only do automatic doors instantly comply with the Equalities Act (formerly the Disability Discrimination Act) but they also help to create a welcoming and inviting entrance to the main reception area.
Automatic doors of course help the disabled with access and parents with pushchairs.

The Curtain Walling used was the Kestrel 125mm system. This can be seen as the main glazing featuring slim mullions and a consistent sight line to the framing. It integrates very well with windows and doors and is therefore ideal as a low or high rise facade or ground floor framing system.
